HUP 150 PUBLIC OPINION, MEDIA AND POLITICS--elective Instructors: Greg Wolk & Andrew Stroehlein

This course examines the relationship between mass media-primarily print and broadcast television but also including the changing role of the Internet-and political systems both in the U.S., U.K. and the Czech Republic. We will explore the effectiveness of mass media, from shaping the political agenda and guiding public policies to influencing election outcomes and affecting political actors and the balance of power. We will also focus on how governments tend to control media effects through content, ownership and other regulations as well as indirect influences. Our analyses will extend into mass media economics issues and audience feedback mechanisms. Finally we will examine how future changes in mass media and access to the internet will likely affect the relationship with politics.
